Technology can help in the fight against distracted driving

WASHINGTON (AP)-With many more countries are implementing the ban on cell phone use in cars, and a huge boost by the National Transportation Safety Board to get States to stop distracted driving, the new year could bring a new strategy.

Institute for highway safety, which is funded by auto insurers, said the new technology in cars can help prevent interruptions from technologies such as mobile phones and GPS units.

The Institute’s Russ Rader said there is a new technology that can automatically hit the brake if the driver does not react quickly enough to a State of emergency.

He said some of the technology is already used on luxury cars and began making its way into more mainstream cars.
