Protic Ionic Liquids

We have developed a class of solvents called protic ionic liquids (PILs) and also known as liquid ammonium salts (LAS). These materials are screened in our solventS service and a selection of them are available in our product catalogue.

LAS are an extraordinarily versatile class of solvents capable of prodigious feats of dissolution for a wide range of materials. Based on ammonium cations they possess unique properties similar to, but distinct from conventional ionic liquids. They are composed of amine/acid combinations which can be selected to provide the optimal set of properties for a given application. Unique properties include:

  • Biodegrabability
  • Recyclability
  • Low viscosity
  • Low volatility
  • Low cost
Background information about LAS can be found in the ionic liquid FAQ section.

Green Solvents
Bioniqs LAS are the first commercially available class of ionic liquids that are proven to be readily biodegradable within 48 hours. They are easily prepared from cheap, readily available, sustainable precursors such as ethanolamine and acetic acid and can be distilled, recycled and regenerated.

Many LAS have also passed toxicity and mutagenicity tests which along with their benign properties demonstrate them as safe solvents to work with, both for the user and the environment.

COMING SOON: Our catalogue will soon include the econiqs range of LAS protic ionic liquids which will be certified to meet a series of stringent environmental criteria.
